The Art of Mark Rothko: Selections from the National Gallery of Art, Washington

This selection of 17 canvases and 10 drawings from all decades of Rothko’s career marked the first retrospective of the artist’s work in Hong Kong or the People’s Republic of China. Organized by the National Gallery of Art and its curator Ruth Fine in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State, it traveled to Seoul, having originated in Mexico City. A near-identical selection of works by Rothko from the National Gallery—one drawing was substituted—had been assembled to commemorate the artist’s centennial in Riga, Latvia, and Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 2003–2004.
