Mark Rothko: A Centennial Celebration
Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth, Mark Rothko: A Centennial Celebration opened in Riga, Latvia, where it was the first exhibition of Rothko’s work in the region of his birth. The exhibition of 17 canvases and 10 drawings from the National Gallery of Art then traveled to the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, where it was presented with a different title. Curated by Laili Nasr of the National Gallery of Art, the exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State. A near-identical selection of works—one drawing was substituted—traveled under another title to Mexico City, Hong Kong, and Seoul from 2005 to 2006.
