Mark Rothko: Works on Paper

The first major exhibition devoted solely to Rothko’s works on paper included 86 works spanning the entirety of the artist’s career, with all but eight of them drawn from the Mark Rothko Foundation. Many of the works, particularly the early drawings and studies for Rothko’s mural projects, had never been publicly shown. The installation at the National Gallery of Art was augmented by the inclusion of several canvases. Mark Rothko: Works on Paper was organized under the direction of Bonnie Clearwater, then curator for the Mark Rothko Foundation. The selection remained consistent throughout the two-year tour, with the exception of the presentation at the Saint Louis Art Museum, where the number of works was reduced to 53. Following the final venue at the Fort Worth Art Museum, the Mark Rothko Foundation drawings were distributed to a host of international museums.
