Mark Rothko: Seven Paintings from the 1960s

This exhibition was part of an initiative by the Mark Rothko Foundation to loan its works to public institutions, and the Walker Art Center was one of the first beneficiaries. Selected by Bonnie Clearwater, then curator of the Mark Rothko Foundation, this presentation included four large canvases from the early 1960s and three smaller works on paper from the latter part of the decade. While the exhibition remained on view for only seven weeks, the works themselves were lent for two years and were later displayed in the Walker’s collection galleries. An illustrated brochure contained a checklist and an essay by Bonnie Clearwater.
