Mark Rothko, 1903–1970: A Retrospective

This 1978–1979 retrospective was at the time the most complete survey of Rothko’s art and included a total of nearly 215 works. Among them were more than 35 works on paper—many exhibited for the first time—which ranged from watercolors and small preparatory studies of the 1930s and 1940s to large-scale paintings on paper from the final years of the artist’s life. The New York presentation, curated by Diane Waldman then at the Guggenheim, was the largest on this multicity tour in the United States.
