Exhibition

Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko was the first retrospective of Rothko’s work to be shown in Asia. In 1995 Japan was second only to the United States in the number of paintings by Rothko in public collections. The Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art, the exhibition’s first venue, had acquired a set of seven Seagram Murals in advance of the opening of the museum in 1990. In addition to these, the traveling exhibition featured works from every decade of the artist’s career, with an emphasis on the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, and included 41 canvases and 13 works on paper. Among the latter were four surrealist works from the mid-1940s; the remaining works on paper were from the late 1960s. Mark Rothko was curated by David Anfam, who was then preparing the catalogue raisonné of Rothko’s works on canvas. The show was organized by the Tokyo Shimbun (newspaper) in collaboration with the International Sculpture Center, Washington, DC.
