Kraft tape and adhesive residue on the back of this sheet indicate that a window mat (since removed) covered the margins of the work at some point. A rectangle of slight discoloration on the front of the sheet caused by light exposure traces the opening of the mat. Evidence of a mat suggests that the work may have been exhibited or offered for sale during Rothko’s lifetime, though it remained in his possession at his death.
Mark Rothko: Works on Paper will ultimately document approximately 2,600 works from public and private collections worldwide. Cataloging is ongoing, and works and information will be added to the site during the coming years.
