This work relates to a canvas, Untitled (Reclining Nude), dated to 1933/1934 (fig. 1). The pose of the subject and the attenuated horizontal format and cramped composition of both works make the relationship clear, but the facture of the painting on paper as well as its support—on black construction paper—suggest a later date of execution. Although the work is not signed, it shows tape marks as if for matting, suggesting that Rothko may have exhibited (or intended to exhibit) this work, shown it to dealers, or offered it for sale.
