Rothko’s cousin Sylvia Weinstein Margulis was an accomplished concert violinist who performed with the Portland (Oregon) Symphony orchestra. She may be the subject of this watercolor, which might have been made by Rothko during a visit to Portland in 1933. [Woman with violin] is stylistically similar to other works dated here as 1932/1933, such as [Woman combing her hair].
Mark Rothko: Works on Paper will ultimately document approximately 2,600 works from public and private collections worldwide. Cataloging is ongoing, and works and information will be added to the site during the coming years.
