In at least two depictions in 1933/1934, Rothko painted two women seated in close proximity and seemingly engaged in conversation (figs. 1, 2). This watercolor is signed and shows evidence of having once been mounted, indicating that it may have been exhibited; if so, no corroborating exhibition checklists have been found.
Mark Rothko: Works on Paper will ultimately document approximately 2,600 works from public and private collections worldwide. Cataloging is ongoing, and works and information will be added to the site during the coming years.
