The inscription “20.00” on Rothko’s original mat, painted white, indicates that Rothko may have attempted to sell this work; he found no purchaser as it remained in his possession at his death. The number assigned during Rothko’s inventory of 1968/1969 erroneously signifies a creation date of 1925–1927 for the work.
