The number assigned during Rothko’s inventory of 1968/1969 signifies a creation date of 1968 for this work, but technical and stylistic comparison with similar works indicates that this work was more likely made in 1959. This work is on a drawing board—a premounted sheet of watercolor on a stiff backing board—made by J. Whatman. Untitled is also on the same type of drawing board.
