The number assigned during Rothko’s inventory of 1968/1969 signifies a creation date of 1953 for this work, but technical and stylistic comparison with similar works indicates that it was more likely made in 1959. When Sedat Pakay, a graduate student in photography at Yale School of Art, photographed Rothko in his studio in 1967, the artist posed before the current work and [Untitled], (fig. 1).
Mark Rothko: Works on Paper will ultimately document approximately 2,600 works from public and private collections worldwide. Cataloging is ongoing, and works and information will be added to the site during the coming years.
