This work relates to a canvas dated c. 1936, Untitled (Cityscape) (fig. 1). Pictured at left may be the sculpture of Giuseppe Garibaldi by Giovanni Turini that stands in Washington Square Park, Manhattan, not far from the West Village apartment where Rothko lived at this time [David Anfam, Mark Rothko: The Works on Canvas (Washington, DC, and New Haven, 1998), 44n123] (fig. 2).
