This watercolor is closely related to the artist’s oil painting The Proposal (fig. 1). It likely depicts Edith Sachar (1912–1981), whom Rothko married in November 1932. David Anfam suggests that The Proposal is autobiographical and portrays Edith and the artist [Mark Rothko: The Works on Canvas (Washington, DC, and New Haven, 1998), 42n34].
