Remarks
During the summer of 1934 Rothko and his wife Edith Sachar (1912–1981) vacationed in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with the Averys—Milton (1885–1965), Sally, and March—and Esther and Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974). The setting depicted here appears to be the interior of an ice cream parlor to judge from the dripping cones in the right hand of the foreground figure. The watercolor resembles in technique and materials other works dating from that summer (e.g., [Wharf, Gloucester, Massachusetts] and see Related Works on Paper), suggesting the possibility of synchronous execution.
