Remarks
Rothko and his wife Edith summered near Lake George, New York,  several times, including stays in 1938 and 1939. This drawing—part of a small series of studies made in the vicinity of the dock at Diamond Point (see Related Works on Paper)—almost certainly dates from this period, during which the Rothkos  rented an old schoolhouse at Trout Lake, a few miles north of Diamond Point.
