The building in this drawing resembles the Hillview Free Library in Diamond Point, New York, a community on the western shore of Lake George a few miles north of the village of Lake George. The library, with its distinctive arched stone entrance, was designed in 1901 by architect J. Dickenson Hunter (fig. 1). Rothko and his wife Edith summered near Lake George several times, including stays in 1938 and 1939. This drawing almost certainly dates from this period. They rented an old schoolhouse at Trout Lake, a few miles north of Diamond Point. During these summers the Rothkos became acquainted with the artist David Smith (1906–1965), who lived in Bolton Landing, just north of Trout Lake.
